Taufan Irene ragut 9 nyawa

Dua juta penduduk bergelap, ramalan paras air naik setinggi 2.4m

NEW YORK: Sekurang-kurangnya sembilan orang termasuk dua kanak-kanak terbunuh, apabila Taufan Irene membadai Carolina Utara dan Virginia ketika ia menghala ke bandar raya New York semalam.
Pada masa sama, lebih dua juta penduduk dari Carolina Selatan hingga Maryland pula terpaksa bergelap apabila kedatangan Irene juga menyebabkan banjir dan angin kencang yang menumbangkan tiang elektrik.
Kekuatan Irene diturunkan kepada kategori satu tetapi ketika menghampiri New York, jabatan kaji cuaca dalam ramalannya memberi amaran Irene menghampiri kekuatan taufan.

Perkhidmatan Kaji Cuaca Kebangsaan melaporkan pihaknya bersedia berdepan puting beliung di New York, Long Island dan Connecticut selatan, ketika ia dilaporkan Delaware dan Maryland.

Pakar kaji cuaca bagi Pusat Taufan Kebangsaan (NOAA), Daniel Browin, berkata ribut akan menyebabkan kenaikan paras air setinggi 1.2 hingga 2.4 meter (m) di kawasan bakal dilanda taufan itu.

“Di kawasan berhampiran pantai, taufan itu membawa bersama ombak besar, berbahaya dan mengancam nyawa,” katanya.
Seorang budak lelaki berusia 11 tahun di Virginia maut apabila pokok tumbang di atas rumahnya dan di Carolina Utara seorang lagi kanak-kanak terkorban dalam kemalangan di persimpangan jalan berikutan lampu isyarat rosak.

Sementara itu, hos rancangan bual bicara kontroversi, Glenn Beck, menyifatkan Taufan Irene sebagai ‘rahmat Tuhan’ dan berkata kedatangan ribut maut itu mengajar penduduk supaya lebih bersedia berdepan bencana semula jadi.

Bercakap dalam programnya di radio, beliau menggesa pendengar bersedia berdepan masalah makanan global.

Presiden Barack Obama melawat ibu pejabat Agensi Pengurusan Kecemasan Persekutuan meninjau persediaan dan aktiviti tindak balas ke atas kejadian kecemasan.

Di NEW YORK, persediaan berdepan taufan itu menjadi amalan biasa namun penduduknya terus dilanda kebimbangan.

Datuk Bandar New York, Michael Bloomberg, mengulangi amaran apabila ramai penduduk kelihatan tidak mempedulikan arahan pemindahan mandatori yang meliputi kawasan di Manhattan dan kawasan persisiran pantai. – Agensi
